What is Allspice?
Allspice (Pimenta dioica) is the dried unripe berry of an evergreen tree in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, the same family as clove, eucalyptus, and tea tree. It is native to the Greater Antilles, southern Mexico, and Central America, and Jamaica has long supplied the bulk of the world crop, with Jamaican berries treated as the trade's quality benchmark. The reason is chemical rather than sentimental: analyses of Jamaican pimento berry oil have measured eugenol at 73 to 75 percent of the volatile fraction, near the top of the species range. Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala also produce commercially, generally at lower eugenol levels.
The name is a double accident. Spanish explorers in the early sixteenth century took the dried berries for a form of black pepper and called them pimienta, which is why Jamaican pimento and the pimiento pepper, a Capsicum with no botanical relation, still share a name. English speakers later renamed it allspice because the aroma reads as a blend of clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg. It is not a blend. It is one berry from one tree.

Whole dried berries contain roughly 2 to 5 percent essential oil by weight. Everything interesting and everything concerning about allspice scales with that oil fraction, so a teaspoon of ground berry in a stew and a few drops of steam-distilled berry oil are not the same product. Most of the safety literature applies only to the second.
Allspice is an excellent culinary spice with a thin and largely borrowed case as a supplement, and the gap between those two statements is the whole story.
What the Label Won't Tell You
When allspice is sold as a supplement rather than a spice, what you are buying is eugenol, and eugenol is clove. Allspice berry oil runs roughly 60 to 80 percent eugenol; clove bud oil runs about 75 to 90 percent, with commercial grades often specified at 85 percent or higher. Nearly every mechanistic claim attached to allspice traces back to eugenol research performed on clove, because clove is the cheaper and more concentrated source of the identical molecule. The antimicrobial activity, the COX inhibition, the local anesthesia used in dentistry since the nineteenth century, the antioxidant capacity: all eugenol, all established on clove. The allspice premium buys a different terpene background, mostly beta-caryophyllene and 1,8-cineole, not a different mechanism. No label is obliged to mention that the cheaper spice in the same aisle delivers more of the active compound.

Critical Safety Point
Allspice berry oil contains methyl eugenol at roughly 4 to 10 percent, and methyl eugenol is not a benign minor constituent. The National Toxicology Program's two-year gavage studies produced dose-related liver tumors in both rats and mice plus rare neuroendocrine stomach tumors in rats, and IARC classifies it as Group 2B, possibly carcinogenic to humans. The European Union caps methyl eugenol in flavored compound foods, from 1 mg/kg in non-alcoholic beverages up to 60 mg/kg in soups and sauces, while exempting foods made with whole fresh or dried herbs and spices. That exemption is the correct framing. Sprinkling ground allspice on food is not the exposure anyone is worried about. Daily concentrated berry oil is a different and unquantified exposure, and no supplement label discloses its methyl eugenol content.

Bottom line

General note
The pediatric cases are the ones worth knowing. Documented clove oil ingestions of 8 to 20 mL in infants and toddlers produced liver injury with ALT peaks above 8,000 and in one case near 13,000 units per litre. Eugenol-rich essential oils belong in a locked cabinet. Nothing comparable has been reported from eating allspice.
