What is Rutin?
Rutin is a flavonol glycoside, specifically quercetin bonded to the disaccharide rutinose, which is itself rhamnose joined to glucose. That structure is the whole story of this ingredient. Rutin is not a distinct active molecule that your body uses as rutin; it is quercetin wearing a sugar coat that human digestive enzymes cannot remove in the small intestine. It was isolated in the 1840s from rue, which is where the name comes from, and it briefly carried the label vitamin P in the 1930s and 1940s before a 1950 recommendation in Science that the term be discontinued, because no deficiency disease was ever demonstrated and no requirement was ever established.
The commercial and clinical history of rutin runs through veins. It is sold for varicose veins, hemorrhoids, capillary fragility, and leg swelling, and there is a genuine clinical literature behind those uses. The complication, covered below, is which molecule that literature actually tested.

Buckwheat is the classic dietary source and the one most people have heard of, but nearly all commercial rutin powder is extracted from the flower buds of Sophora japonica, the Japanese pagoda tree, which contain the compound at a far higher percentage by dry weight than any food crop. Other real dietary sources include capers, among the densest of any food, plus asparagus, citrus peel and pith, and elderflower. Buckwheat groats and buckwheat tea supply meaningful amounts; refined buckwheat flour supplies much less.
Rutin is best approached as a delivery form of quercetin with a specialized vascular reputation attached, and the value of that reputation depends on whether the delivery form works.
What the Label Won't Tell You
The human venous-insufficiency research printed on rutin bottles was not run on rutin. It was run on oxerutins, also called hydroxyethylrutosides or HR, a semisynthetic mixture made by attaching hydroxyethyl groups to rutin, with troxerutin as the largest single component. Swiss chemists patented the modification around 1961 and launched it as Venoruton in 1962 for one reason: plain rutin absorbed too poorly to work reliably by mouth. The modification exists because the parent molecule was not good enough. Rutin is quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, and the human small intestine cannot take that rutinose-linked glycoside up intact. It has to reach the colon, where bacteria cleave the sugar and free quercetin, so what enters circulation from a rutin capsule is largely quercetin metabolites, hours late, on a schedule set by whose gut flora is doing the cleaving. The roughly twenty double-blind trials in venous disease used the modified molecule at 1,000 to 3,000 mg daily. Labels borrow them anyway.

The bleeding question is the one that matters. Rutin's most interesting mechanism, protein disulfide isomerase inhibition, is a genuine antithrombotic pathway, and that is exactly why it deserves respect rather than enthusiasm. The strongest human evidence in this pathway comes from isoquercetin at 500 mg daily in advanced cancer patients, where it measurably reduced D-dimer. That is a real pharmacological effect on coagulation from a close chemical relative. Stacking a gram of rutin on top of an anticoagulant, an antiplatelet drug, high-dose fish oil, or a course of NSAIDs is not a neutral act, and nothing on a rutin label warns about it. Stop it well before any procedure and tell your surgeon you were taking it.

Deficiency Symptoms
Rutin is not an essential nutrient. There is no rutin requirement, no rutin deficiency state, and no clinical syndrome that develops from not eating it. The 1950 recommendation to drop the vitamin P label was made precisely because no such deficiency could be produced.

How Rutin Works

Rutinose blocks uptake in the small intestine. Colonic bacteria produce alpha-rhamnosidase and beta-glucosidase, which strip the sugar and release quercetin for absorption, which is why the response is late and person-specific.
